This was given to me by an old Greek fella who was on his death bed and needed this to be saved and passed along to future generations……..OK, so maybe a bit exaggerated! It is typical of the Greek sauces I have eaten. Don’t even think of skimpin’ on that shortening!
1 pound Ground beef
1 cup Shortening
1 medium Onion(s), diced
1/3 cup Chili powder
2 teaspoons Paprika
1 teaspoon Black pepper, coarsely ground
1 teaspoon Garlic powder
1 teaspoon Cumin powder
1 teaspoon Allspice
1 teaspoon Basil, dried
1 teaspoon Salt
1/2 teaspoon Oregano, dried
Soak beef then brown with onion and shortening.
Add remaining ingredients.
Simmer for 2 hours. You may have to add some water.
This freezes well.
